Seafish Industry Guidance Note on Mackerel 25 March 2015
There was a resolution to the long dispute regarding the fishing of mackerel in the North East Atlantic (NEA) amongst the Coastal States in March 2014. The crisis had erupted in 2009 after the Faeroe Islands withdrew from the mackerel management agreement in response to Iceland’s increasing mackerel catch. The level of autonomous quotas set by both Iceland and the Faeroe Islands during the period 2009 to 2013 was strongly challenged by both the EU and Norway. This briefing note gives some background and explains the current position as at March 2015. -

Alternative Marine Conservation Zones in Irish Sea mud habitat: potential for fisheries displacement and an assessment of habitat condition and potential management scenarios.
Areas of potential alternative Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) sites representing mud habitat within the UK Irish Sea regional sea were selected at a stakeholder engagement meeting in October 2014. In order to assess the suitability of these sites within the Irish Sea regional area, existing data were examined to assess habitat condition, variation and how well these meet the mud habitat criteria set by the UK government. Nephrops stock assessment video surveys were utilised along with grab sample data, across both eastern and western Irish Sea areas. Macroinvertebrate community analysis was undertaken on the grab infaunal data, along with analysis of sediment parameters. The level of disturbance was also examined through benthic community assessment relating to successional stage. -

Seafish commissioned a study to assess the ethical issues impacting on seafood species landed into, and imported to the UK. This strategic report is one of the key outputs. This includes a discussion of the issues and challenges in applying ethical concepts, particularly those set out in international standards on human and labour rights, to the seafood industry; an overview of the main issues for risk assessment, by country and region, by forms of employment, and to some extent by species; and the remedies and responses, drawing on the recent experience from Thailand. -
